Big Miracles and a trip to Fukuoka

FAMILY AND FRIENDS,

This week was the craziest week ever. And I spent the whole week wondering what the heck was going on. It was amazing. I don't even know where to start.

This week we paid some money to the local government to set up shop in a busy part of the city and hand out Eikaiwa (English class) fliers like crazy. We did it all day every day all week. It was crazy successful. We had 15 new students at Eikaiwa on Wednesday. People love Americans. People love English. It was crazy fun- all 8 of us missionaries bringing people closer to Christ through English.

On the way to the meeting place, one set of elders met K san, the crazy prepared person we set a baptism date with on my birthday. Remember her? She was getting baptized in 3 weeks before some unfortunate things happened. Well, the elders start talking it's her and they end up talking for 30 minutes and she resolves to call us in the evening.

So we get the call and we were on top of the world. We chat, she wants to meet again and knows that the church is true and has been praying and been reading the scriptures since we last met over a month and a half ago. So we set up an appointment to met with her on Saturday.

So Saturday comes and we meet with her and she's even more prepared than she was before. She has a solid testimony of God and Jesus Christ and the restoration of the true restored gospel though Joseph Smith. And she told us she know for a fact that this church is the true church and the way back to God and becomes of that she would like to be baptized asap. Our jaws dropped to the floor and proceeded to set a baptism date with her for next Tuesday (she's been to church twice already and has heard half the lessons (and we got special permission from the AP's [assistants to the President of the mission] and stuff as well). It's way fun to teach her becomes she believes with all her heart that we're messengers from God. It makes it really easy to teach, she believes EVERYTHING we say and it's because she has a solid testimony of God.

Fast forward to Sunday. We went to 10 hours of church meetings. Our ward's meetings were from 8am-1:30pm. Then we went to the other ward (with K san) from 2pm-5pm and scheduled lessons with her for an hour. We got home at 6pm very exhausted but happy. Our ward asked us to move her baptism date to next Sunday after church so more members could attend. We were happy to move it and so was she. AHHH!!!!!!!!

In Sunday school we learned about the word of wisdom with her [church teaching that encourages healthy eating and prohibits the intake of alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco, or harmful drugs]. Like every Japanese person out there, she likes drinking her tea. But when she found out that she shouldn't drink it she started apologizing profusely even though she hadn't known about it before. She said that if it's from God, she will do it. It was as simple as that. So cool.

In other news, on Friday I went up to Fukuoka to see the doctor who helped my back feel way good. We bused there and we went through Chikushino!!!!! [previous area she lived] Once we get to the hospital, we are checking in and a nurse comes up to us and starts chatting with us about dendo and we were a little confused before we realized she was a member. And then I realized what her name was. O. I asked if she was, by chance, related to O shimai [One of Emma's companions who has since finished her mission]. She is!!! They're sister-in-laws! And I gave her a note to give O shimai because she was coming down the next day to go to the temple. It was happy making 😊
Italian Food!

Anyway, the doctor went really well. He said the problem is the same as before but not as bad. Which is hopeful. I'm going back to see him next week and he thinks after that I'll be good. Happy day! Because of that, we are postponing the decision to go home until after next weeks visit.
Bear Socks

Speaking of backs, thank you so much to everyone who prayed and/or fasted on my behalf. The power of fasting and prayer is real. For 2 days, I had no back problems- the day everyone in Japan fasted and the day everyone in America fasted. And since then, my back hasn't been acting up. I've been able to get out and teach and dendo. There's less pain. It's a huge miracle. I'm so grateful for everyone's faith. I also know that through everyone's fasting and prayers for a miracle, another unexpected miracle happened. It is not a coincidence that K san was found again the day after all the fasting and prayers. She's getting baptized because of your guys faith in a miracle and I'm so grateful❤️

Well, this next week should be exciting. The next pday will be on a Tuesday. Pray for all good things to happen before then (in regards to my back and K san). No matter what happens, it will be an exciting week. Probably full of drama. Lol. Have an AWESOME WEEK!! I love you guys to death.
Birthday presents from Aunt R!

Love love love,
ベアマン姉妹🏊🏼‍♀️

P.s. side note: I fell off my bike into traffic this week becomes I hit the curb funny but never fear, a Russian guy can to the rescue and saved me. We couldn't really communicate with him but he was way nice. Hooray for angels!

Trains, trials, tears, and some hopeful news

Hello! Can you send this to all the normal
peeps? I don't have my iPad so things are weird. This week was crazy and ALL OVER THE PLACE. So I'll give you the highlights instead of the day by day play by play. Because some of the days were fairly rough and not much exciting things happened. [Emma's back was causing very significant problems last week making it hard for her to leave the house many days - see the bottom for additional details] Konaha eki (train station): we went with the elders in another epic train trip to see less actives that love way far out. We got off the train and GREEN OVERLOAD. Rice paddies for dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyz. It was beautiful. And we just got to spend all day wandering around in this beautiful scenery looking for 3 less actives houses. We found all 3 (unheard of) and talked to 2 (even more unheard of). Also, as we walked though the mixture of bamboo forest and rice paddies we found The World's Largest Spiders. Larger than my hand. Fortunately they didn't seem in the mood to attack.
Eikaiwa: during the conversation portion I was talking to 2 high school girls and a college aged boy and I taught them tongue twisters! It was hilarious. To get back at me they taught me a Japanese one: Namamugi namagome nama tamago. Then they were laughing at me. It was a good time. Way fun. The Gap: there's a Gap in the shopping area towards the edge of our area. We've been dendoing a lot in the shopping area because it's nicer on my back and we can still get out and talk to people. We've come good friends with a lot of store workers. So we went to the Gap (where all the clothes were 50% off) and were wandering around looking at all the American style cloths. And the worker started chatting with us. Turns out she loves English and is going to Australia soon to study English. She was WAY interested in Eikaiwa. It was way cool to meet her. And she's works all day everyday so shop dedno was the only was we could ever meet her.
Shion (how you say Zion in Japanese): she's a cute high school girl we meet 2 weeks ago in the park. We had lunch with her!! At McDonald's (which is a class institution in Japan). We chatted and religious things came up. But it was casual. At the end we shared "I am a child of God" from the new meet the Mormons. And she LOVED IT. She asked for a copy of it. Happy day. North Korean spies: we just got word that one of our creepier English class students might in actuality be a North Korean spy.

Happy scientist: So. We randomly visited a less-active
this week whose family are pretty hardcore Happy Scientists. Which means they
believe that all religions are true.

We said hello at their genkan [traditional Japanese entry
way] and they happily invited us in,
sat us down, handed us chopsticks,
and shoved a bowl a freshly cut raw
fish in front us, commanding us to
eat. We were very confused but
 happily partook. The less-actives
nonmember son was happy to talk to
us, and actually invited us to go
to a Happy Science activity with him.
 We politely declined. Meanwhile the
mom of the household wandered in and out of the
conversation, and at one point returned with
someone's newborn baby. Never did receive clarification
about whose baby it was. Anyways, we shared a video about Jesus, which led to a
discussion about why American bombed Japan if America is a Christian country.
We didn't know, so we testified of how Christ can help us overcome our weaknesses,
heal, and forgive. We both left this encounter very confused, honestly we still
aren't sure what happened. (My lovely comp wrote this for me).

It was a strange week. We'll see what next week brings. Love love love, ベアマン姉妹 Sent from my iPad

[In a separate email from Emma]

Hey fambam,
Heard you got a call from President A. 😬 [President A is our Stake President, or
local church leader over the area where we live] Hopefully it wasn't too  shocking? Surprising? I was trying to keep you informed. But you know, not be terribly depressing. [President A called me at Evan's soccer game and told me Emma's back is doing badly, and she might have to come home early from Japan to get treatment for it] So yeah. The first part of this week was a train wreck. Not much dedno. Having my back hurt all day everyday had gotten to be tiring. Lots of feeling REALLY UNBEARABLY SAD and sleeping (because I hadn't been sleeping at night). And stretching. It was quite pitiful now that I look back on it. Well, we had interviews with Kaicho and Shimai [Mission President and his wife] on Thursday. Well timed? Ill timed? Who knows. Probs well timed. I was the first one to go in and talk to him. Well, I figured we'd talk about going home. And we did. There was a lot of crying on my part. And a lot of speaking God's word on his part. And we decided to take a week and pray to know what God's plan is. Also, to pray for a huge miracle. He gave me a blessing. In it he talked about both options equally. He blessed me to be healed but there wasn't a clear time frame set for that... But he also blessed me not to feel depressed and sad and since then, I haven't felt overwhelmingly sad. So yeah, at this point, who knows. I talked to Shimai last [Mission President's wife]. She just listened. And comforted. Man, they're amazing. After interviews I felt way better. A lot lighter. I think I was really stressed thinking about talking about going home. My back hurt less and so did my heart. Although this whole going home business has me STRESSED but a different stressed because I want to make the right decision. I want to  have hope I'll be healed but like if that's not God's plan I don't know what to think. In the blessing, God said He would grant me the righteous desires of my heart and my desires are to stay but like what if that's not righteous. Or the most righteous option. You know? I don't know. Anywho, after interviews I felt a LOT BETTER. Kaicho called me on Saturday which was a little startling. He told me he had called President A and that Pres A was calling you. *minor freak out because that means things are getting serious.* Kaicho and Shimai, Sister M and I all fasted yesterday to see a big miracle and to get an answer. And I hear your fasting (fasted?) today with a bunch of people. [Fasting is going without food for two meals and praying for a special purpose] At the end of my fast, I asked an elder to give me a blessing of council. Man, I got counseled. God told me He has a plan for me. And His plan is perfect. . .So I'm basically here in Japan not really knowing what to do. I know what I want. But I don't know if that aligns with what God wants. But I'm still praying for a big miracle. Thanks for fasting for me (I'm grateful for everyone else fasting for me too). I cried tonight when I realized how many people loved me enough to fast for me. [Dana and I are very grateful to all who fasted with us, and we cried too grateful for all the love and support. Thank you everyone!] I love you guys. Also, feel free to share this email with more people. Or put it on the blog. Or not put it on the blog. Either way really. I'm just sending it to you guys first. And I know everything will work out the way it's supposed to.
Love love love Emma

President A,
I am sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you but Sister Bearman went in to another doctor today to see if she could get some relief and I wanted to know the results of that visit before calling you. This was a Doctor here in Fukuoka which is about 2-3 hours away from where she is currently
living that she went to before she was transferred to Kumamoto.
Sister Bearman was very upbeat and happy today as the doctor told her that she was not as bad as she was the first time that she came in for treatment and that he thought after another visit (Next Thursday) that she would be back to where she was before she left  Fukuoka.
This is great news. We will be praying that the doctor is right and that Sister Bearman will not need to return home. Thanks for your prayers and fasting. The power of the fast is real.

"Shakes" in McDonald's, Japanese kids at church, Eikaiwa students turned church members

Hello my beloved brothers (Evan and Josh) and sister (camille), Hello to all my
other beloved people as well, This week was a strange one. Weird cool things happened that made me remember that God does keep Hos promises. Sometimes, you just have to wait for the blessings. We've been investigator-less in Shimizu for 15 weeks (I don't know what that is in normal time). But our hard work has paid off and we have 4 Eikaiwa students who are ALL INTERESTED IN JESUS. Which it perfect because I'm interested in Him too. Tuesday: overall not an eventful day but I was able to feel God's love through 2 amazing members. So a member and his wife have an acupuncture and other Japanese-y magic medicine shop that I go to and they fix my back. Well, normally there's 4-5 other patients there but that day it was just me so they focused on fixing just me. And we chatted about being a missionary (they are both RM's [returned missionaries or have served a mission before]) and practiced Japanese. They made me feel loved. They're like my Japanese parents (I've found them!!). Then after their magic we snacked on banana chips. I was ordered to bed rest so we chilled the rest of the night.
Wednesday: we had a BBQ. In Japan. With rice. And squid. And horse. Strange but good. 2 of our Eikaiwa [English class] students came and we set up a time to have a lessons with them. A and E. We met them on Pday shopping for stationary. They're sisters and we met them on Friday. More good news to come. Most of the day was taken up at the doctor. BUT NOT FOR ME. For my lovely companion who has something growing out of her foot. It's probably an eyeball. Eikaiwa was crazy. I did kids Eikaiwa with a new missionary who's been out 2 weeks. And the kids were all over the place, screaming. The usual fun. I love kids English class. Screaming (not singing) English songs and writing the alphabet on EVERYTHING. Thursday: I dendoed [missionary work] at the doctor. To the doctor, a nurse, a new worker, and the lady at the front desk. They were all just asking all the right questions!!! Perks of being a foreigner. They always ask why you're in Japan. Perfect segway into God and His love. Man. This is so fun. We ran to a return appointment afterward who didn't show. Since we were in front of McDonald's we went in and got a shake or 2. Lol. That was unintentional. But we did have 2 kinds of shakes. Chocolate shakes and earth shakes. We've been having quite a few of the latter kind recently. And they've been 3 and 4's on that scale. Which is huge on the 8th floor. We went shopping in this Japanese stuff store and we got chatting with the workers and found out they all liked English. So we invited them all to Eikaiwa. This week we've had cool dendo opportunities in strange unexpected places. It's the best. And so fun.
Friday: what an amazing day. We met with A and E. AND THEY ARE SO PREPARED. We showed them the bless4 "I am a child of God" and the Spirit was so strong. We taught them to pray after and they both were so excited to pray. Their prayers were amazing simple and sweet. But very sincere. It was the most Spirit filled lesson I've ever had. I wasn't saying my words. I was saying words from God that they needed to hear. It was really humbling to see Him do His work through me. After they left we had a dance party because we were SOOO happy. Today was a good follow the Spirit day, now that I think about it. With our recent convert- M shimai- I totally changed the lesson plan once the lesson started (surprising my companion, but she's good and went with it) and the lesson was exactly what M shimai and the member that came with us needed to hear. As we read about Jesus together, we all really felt love and strength from Him. Probably something we all needed to talk about. Before dinner we went to the park and had a play date with the 8 year girls we've been plying with every week. We have so much fun together. And it seriously makes the little girls and her mom's day. We made up swing games together. Preparing people's hearts for the future missionaries coming their way. I'm too tired to write what happened on Saturday and Sunday. I might make a video. I'm sorry!!!! I still love you. I'm iPad-less right now. So all of this is a lot harder to do. Sorry. Well, it was a happy week. With happy stuff. Love love love ベアマン姉妹 Sent from my iPad

And I spoke in the night

So we meet a part member family in the rain under a bike cover by the side of an
Emma "bought an apron
so I stop ruining all my
clothes when I make meals
apartment on Thursday. We decide to open in prayer so I start praying in Japanese. Half way through the prayer I forgot why I was praying so I hurried and finished the prayer and said amen. And then my companion, from another dimension said amen. And I woke up. Freaked out. I had said the whole prayer out loud in my sleep and woke up my companion. So at 3:00 am, we were laughing our butts off. There were tears of mirth streaming down both of our faces. Hello family! This week, if anything, was a hilarious week. I decided to start off by telling the funniest part. That did indeed happen. It was hilarious. Apparently I talk in my sleep on the occasion. In a hilarious mix of Japanese and English. But it's always coherent. It causes my companion many giggles. Man, God is one hilarious perfected being. Tuesday: we were on the way to the doctor in the morning and we were waiting at a stoplight, chatting and giggling as usual, and I turned around and saw a cute Indian girl. She said hello in English so we started chatting with her. She was really nice and seemed happy to be able to communicate with us. We exchanged numbers and she wants to meet and talk again. Then, in the evening we had a family home evening with the T family (part member family). The parents seemed so happy and it's cool to see how their relationship improves and the husband learns more about the gospel. For the lesson we had to play zone, I was on kid duty, M shimai was on parent duty. I had fun playing with their son. He prayed at the end with his moms help. It was super cute be aide she started to close the prayer and he wouldn't close the prayer until he said thank you for Jesus. It was precious.
Wednesday: rough day. No one wanted to talk and people rejected us sort of rudely. We got to our lesson with M shimai (recent convert) early so I decided to turn down another road to street for a bit longer. The first girl we met was a cute college student and had a blast talking to us. It was nice after all the rude "no's". A little miracle to make the day a little sweeter. Then we had a rocking lesson with M shimai about priesthood blessings and patriarchal blessings. It was a really Spirit filled lesson because I felt God tell me that He keeps His promises even as I was promising M shimai the same thing. Then we went to baskin robins (called 31 ice in Japan) because on the 31st of any month with a 31st, a double scoop ice cream is 31% off. So we partied hard by eating fancy on sale ice cream. In the evening there was a scale 4ish earthquake (according to a Eikaiwa student) for 15-20 seconds during Eikaiwa (English class). Everyone in the room got quiet REAL fast. Thursday: our alarm was on silent so we didn't wake up at 6:30am but at 6:31am there was another earthquake (as big and as long as the night before) that totally woke us up. Who even needs alarms? On a side note: it's been a while since we've had earthquakes this big. Things should be ok? Then we had a...beach trip!! So, when I first got here and was looking at maps of the area, I realized that in the far reaches of our area, we had a beach. So this transfer, one of our goals was to have a beach trip. So we planned one out- visiting 5 less actives and 1 member on the way. The elders decided to tag along so we could decide and conquer finding houses. It was a 45 minute train ride and we didn't meet a all of the people (3/5) but we ran into and chatted with a lot of people who have probably never seen missionaries because they live so far out. We walked all over the place and saw lots of beautiful rice fields. We ended off the trio by going to the beach. We could see Nagasaki's huge mountains in the distance. [Likely Mount Fugen] It was beautiful. And we got into the water (only knee deep) and it was such a happy moment. We also found cool shells and sea glass on the sand. When we got home, I was emptying out my bag and I saw something more. Upon further investigation, I discovered a tiny crab in my bag! I named him Cornelius.
Friday: a year ago, on this day, I entered into the MTC to begin learning Japanese. It's crazy how far I've come in a year. I can like, someone communicate with another person in another language. It's pretty cool. We had a zone conference. There was 22 elders and 4 sisters. It's was fun. In the evening we went to the park for a play date with the 8 year old girls we met the other week. They showed up and we played until their moms came. Then we were swinging at the park a little longer and a cute high school girl bikes by. I say "hi" and she says "hi" back and bikes away. Then, 5 minutes later she comes biking back and starts talking to us in English (with Japanese thrown in here and there). We end up chatting with her for 10 minutes and set up a time to eat lunch together and practice talking in the English. Huge miracle!
Saturday: we weekly planned at a restaurant. I had a huge mango shaved ice thing. It was awesome. That's about it? We probably did more... We went to 2 return appointments right next to each other and neither was home. So we decided to knock on the nice looking house next door and a really cool lady answered. She listened and we had a good conversation about the purpose of life. Unfortunately, even though she loves singing gospel music, she doesn't think she needs Jesus. But it was
cool to meet her.
Wind blowing off helmet of Emma's Companion
Sunday: So, apparently a typhoon was coming so we only had an hour of church and were confined by Kaicho's (presidents) orders to stay inside from 12pm to 5pm. [I think Tropical Storm Namtheun] But the typhoon got held up in Kagoshima so we just had some crazy rain. Now they say the typhoon might hit today. We'll see. Because we had a bunch of apartment time (and we've already called all our formal and potential investigators 3-5 times) we decided to make a fancy dinner. So we made mashed potatoes, stuffing, fruit salad, and rosemary chicken. For dessert we had pudding and ice cream. It was a feast. We had a lot of studying time and journaling time (which is nice because on Sunday we don't normally have studies). It was a way lax day. Huge miracle: all of the sudden the phone rings and it's an unknown number. I answer and hear a familiar Japanese voice on the other side. The voice says their from the Naha 1st ward and that their name is K shimai. I freaked out because I KNEW HER!! She was in my first areas ward!! I told her who I was and she got really excited. We were both SO happy. It was really cool because the last time I saw her, I couldn't really understand her and I could only say really really really basic things to her. But I was able to have a real life conversation with her. And understand her. She was calling about a less active friend who she heard lived in our area. It was a huge miracle to be able to speak with her again. Man, God is SO AWESOME! So this week was fun. And miraculous. But what's new? It looks like we might finally make some investigators out of people this week. I'm excited 😄 Keep killing it guys!! Love love love ベアマン姉妹 P.s. I went to the doctor this morning and I realized something really cool. All the nurses want to help me and want to say goodbye to me when I'm there. And they always look more cheerful when I chat with them. How cool is it that I have the chance to share God's love with a bunch of nurses everyday. And they feel that love so that makes them want to be around me when I'm there. They feel the difference the Spirit is making in their life. Keep sharing your light guys! Sent from my iPad

Raw Horse, Cooked Noodles, Swings and some rain

Hello ai suru family!!!!!

Me and M shimai have another transfer together!! I AM SO HAPPY. We have a lot of fun together. And now we just get to have more fun!!!

Tuesday: we went to the huge mountain/volcano- Aso. It was huge. It was beautiful. It was green. It was a 2 hour car ride there and a 2 hour car ride back. It's been so long since I've been in a car (and since we were going up a mountain, the roads were way twisty) I got a little car sick. I've never been car sick in my life before my mission. And not my body is not used to cars. At all. On the plus side, we ate some really good mango soft serve ice cream on top of the mountain. A day is always good with ice cream.
Wednesday: we were a 3 man. One person went up to trainers training and her companion who was going home packed all day with us. We did go out and teach a lesson to a Philippino investigator of the other sisters. So we taught in English. The cool part was that our 3rd companion (a Japanese sister) totally killed it in English. It was simple English but it got the point across and the Spirit was strong. It gave me hope for my Japanese. Every once and a while a nice reminder is needed that even though your speaking another language, the Spirit will use whatever broken unintelligible mess you to say to help them feel God's love. Also, a member gave us basashi (raw horse meat). Lemme tell you, it was delicious. Better than steak (not that I've had raw steak)! I highly recommend it.
Thursday: Transfer day! We took the missionary going home to the Shinkansen. Aka, the bullet train. It makes a 2+ hour bus ride a 30 minute train ride. Way cool 😊 After, we went to the church and made crepes with all the missionaries staying. Then we cleaned the apartment and organized before going to pick up the new missionary. She's a BRAND new missionary. She's stellar and it's amazing and it makes me think back to my brand new missionary stage. It's cool to see how far I've come in a year. Also, we stopped by Claire's in the evening because we have a PI [potential investigator to teach] who works there. We stuck out heads in to say hi and then we chatted. She showed us some ¥100 earrings and I, in a moment of weakness, bought some sick ninja earring. I'm so pleased. Also, it make her look good in front of her boss.
Friday: our area is the boonies. We drove out with a member to visit some members and less actives (1.5 hours by car) and there were more rice paddies than houses. It was beautiful. Also, we got way lost. We went with K shimai (who is my Japanese mom). She is HILARIOUS. She was a missionary and went to college in Utah so she knows more English than I do. But she talks to us in Japanese just throwing enough English in to help us follow along. She has the funniest mission stories. After the crazy long car adventure- and an all you can eat restaurant- we dendoed. While dendoing we decided, rather abruptly, to go swing on some swings at a nearby park. As we rounded the corner to the park we see to little girls. We yell "can we play?" And they yell back "of course!" So we played with two 8 year olds at a park and it was glorious. When their moms came to pick them up, they told us "we'll be here next Friday at the same time if you want to play." Yeah, we'll probably go back.
Saturday: M shimai (recent convert) is amazing. We had a lesson with her and we just read the BoM together. It was way fun to see her insights on scriptures (especially because we hit the good ole Isaiah chapters). It was interesting and rather difficult to explain the context of Isaiah in Japanese. But we had fun and felt the Spirit as always. I l left her lesson with the biggest grin. Afterwards we threw a goodbye party for the elders Chinese investigator. He flies home next week. He was really sad to say goodbye to us. Especially because there's no missionaries in China. It's really cool to see how God gets His work done in China without having missionaries there.
Sunday: we had a crazy busy day of lessons with members and biking out to a return appointment. The best part of the day (besides going to a members house, playing with their kids, and eating the husbands amazing Italian food (he's a stellar cook)) was biking home in the torrential rain. We had none of our rain stuff. But it was so liberating. We were soaked but it was way fun. Next time it's raining go bike riding in a dress shirt and skirt. It'll be the time of your life.
This week I'll be hitting my YEAR MARK (what does that even mean?!?! I'm so OLD). But I still have time... Have a good week! Have fun at school!!! Love love love
